Al Pomroy

Graduate Certificate of Visual Art

Through painting and drawing techniques my work explores the expressive potential of the line. In my practice, lines express an encounter with the language of place, cultural dress and nature. The use of lines in my work also relates to memory, which I consider as multilayered, inherently complex and interwoven. The confluence of the line as an expression of culture and memory, takes my work beyond the directly observable; the poignancy of the line is in its directness.

I develop the picture plane through a process of addition and negation, combining the vitality of line movement with the layering process. I work intuitively and often incorporate resonant qualities from smaller studies. Painting on canvas is a slow process of balancing visual references with the demands of the painting itself.
