Karleng Lim

Master of Contemporary Art

I am a multidisciplinary artist engaging in interdisciplinary research, seeking new ideas around climate change and a reconsideration of our relationship with nature. Here I explore the power of myths and meaning-making at the heart of human-nonhuman relations by revisiting animist ideas, creating conditions towards accepting that all the constituent parts of the natural world have agency and personhood. The project’s aim is simple—to challenge traditional anthropocentric notions of nature and instil new narratives by planting seeds of awareness that, like us, every being has their own 'umwelt', a sense perception of the environment or worldview that is essential and unique to them. Can we see beyond our own 'umwelten'? Perhaps we can use anthropomorphism in service of animist concepts to expand it.
