Kye Hilton

Bachelor of Fine Arts (Drawing & Printmaking)

Via the use of pastels, I am creating works that exemplify the sort of psychological and emotional turmoil I have drawn upon previously. Murky, earthy and malevolent tones punctuated with bold, operatic colours, applied with a variety of drawing techniques, highlight the themes I have been pursuing. Many pieces may find their visual ties with historical movements, such as abstract expressionism, surrealism or faux-naïf. Adjacent to this, I am creating a series of photos, which I manipulate to complement the aesthetic of the drawings, while coexisting as independent works of their own. My photographs are uniform, in that they are all without colour, using only the coldest and alienating blacks and whites, allowing them to run parallel to the pastel works without either medium usurping the other in the series. In this sense, the stylistic tropes of each work are consistent, creating a homogeneity and establishing a sense of continuity.
