Lily Beamish

Bachelor of Fine Arts (Drawing & Printmaking)

I paint crowds and places and the unspoken tension between the two. Crowds used to be a common part of day-to-day life; individual people would melt into packs and the architectural surroundings would fade into the background. People passed through spaces without a second glance. Observing such spaces, these passages of transit, is integral to my process. In concentrating on prosaic subject matter, my goal is to evoke an awareness of the beauty that surrounds the everyday, and the forms and patterns that exist around us. I use the traditional medium of oil on wood to produce these scenes and think of my process of painting as comparable to a Salsa: I may be leading the dance, but the medium is just as important in the outcome.
