Christina Carey
Bachelor of Fine Arts (Photography)
I work across video, photography and sculpture, and my practice explores the phenomenological experience of time. I focus on installation to create 'zones'—spaces where visual and aural elements manufacture an atmosphere of contained calm. Moving images that appear suspended in space are often framed by rigid sculptural elements. Images are mirrored throughout my work, implying the spectral presence of other spaces and times. In my video work, time feels prolonged but is cut by fleeting interruptions—intermittent reminders of the possibility that we may be experiencing an altered state of consciousness. Materials such as acrylic, wood, concrete and steel are called upon to create the hard lines that juxtapose my selection of vaporous imagery, contained within an architectural frame.
