The Elusive Past: Places and Paintings
This year, I put the finishing touches on a short memoir about my experiences as a child and young adult. At the same time, I was working on a series of paintings that focused on significant moments in my life. While the memoir is written in a conventional way with event following event, like beads on a string, I tried to do something quite different with the paintings. For these, I reflected on some memorable places and paintings, but I did this in such a way that the two were intermingled: the portrayal of significant places also paid homage to some of the artworks that had gripped me most when I first saw them. In this series of paintings, I look back on places that have shaped me and some of the artworks that made an indelible impression on my youthful consciousness.
