Maree Purcell

Graduate Certificate of Visual Art

Just as colours vibrate with frequency, my work considers text as materiality containing an inherent frequency both visually and aurally. Weaving together tactile, poetic language with digital imagery, I create slant-linear narratives that consider alternate quantum webs of transmission around us—how dream consciousness, emotion and thought vibrate in spaces and the potentiality of communicating through higher frequencies within physical, virtual and subconscious spaces.

The Rising is a video dreamscape using spoken word. The work collages patterning, repetition and dream logic with intergenerational cycles over time, using footage from lockdown interspersed with historical Super 8 images from my videographer father. Metaphor proffers to both the global and personal macro social condition—the consciousness shift of our times—within a micro dialogue.
